We flashed a customers 996TT recently and had a chance to dyno the car today with some impressive numbers. To make sure all was safe and correct, we dynoed the car on a Mustang AWD dyno and logged the boost pressure with our Durametric tool. Doing a 3rd gear pull, the boost was spot on at 1.0bar through our datalogs. Generally a flashed 996TT makes about 410awhp and 415tq. For some ODD reason, this 996TT made 480ft/lbs of torque and 417awhp. So… Thought we would share the dyno, the Softronic Tuning experience, and the picture.

Car has Softronic ECU Flash, Agency Power DV’s, Silicone FHose, K&N Flat Panel.

So you might be googling this and wondering why your ABS/PSM light is on and your Porsche 996 Turbo is only making .4 or .5bar. Don’t blame the tune, don’t yell at your dealer. This is a common problem for the Porsche 996TT cars with higher mileage or aftermarket intakes. What happens is the MAF sensor goes bad putting the car into limp mode. The MAF is located on the left side of the engine bay just behind the intake box on the intake tube. It requires a special T6 tool from Porsche to remove the bolts. This part can be replaced from anywhere around $200-$400 depending on the supplier. MAF can go bad for a number of reasons. Usually what will cause a bad MAF is unlaminar airflow.

The factory intake has a waffle looking screen that goes betwen the MAF and the intake box filter. This keeps the airflow that goes past the MAF laminar or “straight”. Turbulence can cause that very sensitive MAF sensor to fail. Another cause of the MAF failure is over oiling your aftermarket filter or touching the sensor and getting “dirt” on it. Make sure to only handle the sensor by the top plug and never grab the sensor part.

The 996TT MAF controls many applications in the car, when tuned properly, these can handle up to 800 horsepower at the crank. Remember to always run a diagnostic check on your car to see what codes may come up.

The customer emailed us, “Also wanted to give you my comments on the Softronic ECU upgrade — all I can say is HOLLY SMOKES!!! Best bang for the buck modification!! The car feels like the hand of god is trying to push you through the back of the seat when the turbos come on line now!! My eyeballs are still being removed from the back of my head! The car runs completely smooth at idle, and it feels completely civilized until you dip into the throttle.”

Glad your happy!

On a budget and don’t want to go overboard on modifications? The K16/16G is an excellent turbo upgrade that can be done with the stock Porsche 996 Turbo K16 turbochargers. Fast spool up is maintained while the modified exhaust side of the turbo helps it breathe substantially more giving you gains across the mid to top RPM’s. With the Softronic ECU tune incorporating the 5bar FPR, your car will be putting out 575hp to the crank. Modifications should be consulted with a installer and the assistance of Softronic to maximize the potential of your vehicle. For those running catless race pipes, Softronic raises the O2 limiters which trick the computer from throwing a CEL. This map is available for a 91 octane or 93 octane pump gas car as well.

Softronic flashes all the 996 Turbo cars via the OBDII port with the provided flasher cable. With their Flasher Client software, they are reading a full 1mb of the file to completely tune the ECU. Other companies claim to be able to do this, but are only read 128kb and making global changes. Softronic will also provided you with your original file. With this original file you can flash your car back to stock at any point. This map includes 2 revisions in the price. If revisions are necessary, you must provide the dyno sheet showing HP, TQ, Boost, and AFR as well as a Durametric datalog. The Durametric cable is required for the revisions to be considered.

With a 25% drivetrain loss, that is a 566hp to the crank. The car was equipped with a high flow exhaust system, boost hoses, cold air intake, diverter valves, 5bar FPR, and running 1.2bar on 109octane race gas.

Much like our other K24/18G upgrade tune, this ECU file keeps the stock injectors and boost solenoid and runs the much simpler 5bar fuel pressure regular. By having a fixed boost pressure of 1.2-1.3 bar, additional fuel is not needed. This turbo setup then produces the same low end turbo spool of the K24 but with a huge increase in the mid to top end RPM range from the 18G exhaust side upgrade. Inconjunction with corresponding mods, this ECU tune will take your vehicle up to 625HP to the crank.
